How to Choose the Best Rug for Your Space

At Jamie Smith Interiors, one question we hear a lot of is how to choose the right rug for a space. And we get it! Styles, sizes, layouts, and layering . . . there’s a lot to consider when it comes to finding the perfect rug. So we want to make it a little bit easier on you! We’re sharing our top interior design tips on how to choose the best rug for your space. We’re talking all about choosing the right size and style, plus our go-to tips on layouts and layering!

Finding a Rug That Fits Your Style

First and foremost, before starting your rug search, you need to ask yourself what style you’re going for. What is the current vibe in the space, and how can you add a rug that elevates that aesthetic? Maybe you’re going for a very organic, textural feel. A seagrass, sisal, or jute rug just might be the perfect fit! If you're going for a tried and true classic, vintage rugs add the perfect touch of timeless character and charm. We also love moroccan rugs for the right space, and you can never go wrong with a neutral-toned wool rug.

Choosing the Best Rug for Your Furniture Layout

Now that you’ve narrowed down the rug style you’re going for, it’s time to find the right size for your space and furniture layout. As interior designers, we have some tried and true guidelines we follow when it comes to size and layout. We’re walking you through our rug guides for the living room, dining room, and bedroom right here right now!

Living Room Rug Guide

Let’s start off with the living room. When looking for the perfect rug size for your living room, the most common sizes are normally 8x10, 9x12, and 10x14. The right rug size varies depending on the size of your space. So use these sizes as references, but be sure to take proper measurements before choosing which is right for you!

The biggest thing to remember for your living room is that you want the front legs of the furniture to sit on the rug. Your couch and chairs shouldn’t be fully on top of the rug, but you don’t want them floating around the perimeter of the rug either. Keep in mind you’ll also want to have at least 6 inches of space on each side of your furniture pieces. Following these tips will ensure that the rug feels large enough for your living space.

Dining Room Rug Guide

Now on to the dining room! For the dining room you want your dining table and chairs to sit comfortably on top of the rug, with plenty of space on all sides of the dining table and chairs. The rug should extend at least 8 inches from both ends of the dining table. The most common rug sizes we see in dining rooms tend to be 6x9, 8x10, and 10x12, but again, remember to get accurate measurements to find the right fit for your space!

Bedroom Rug Guide

Last, but not least, the bedroom. The rug size you choose for your bedroom ultimately depends on the size of your bed. If you have a king size bed your best bet is 9x12, and if you have a queen size bed we recommend 8x10. Other than those size guidelines you’ll want to leave at least 8 inches of space from your bedside tables to the beginning of the rug, and the rug should extend at least 1 foot past the end of the bed.

How to Layer Rugs Like a Pro

Now that we’ve gone over rug layouts, we just had to touch on one of our favorite rug trends . . . layering! We love a good layered rug look, and we know you do too! It elevates the space and ties in additional texture, color, and pattern. It might seem tricky to find the perfect rug combo for layering, but truth be told, it’s pretty simple! We recommend using a natural rug as the base. From there, you just have to find the perfect rug to layer on top! Did we mention vintage rugs are some of our favorites?
